Nationals vs Astros

Nationals vs Astros

The Houston Astros took an early lead, but the Washington Nationals recovered to earn a 5-4 victory in Game 1 of the 2019 World Series.

Yuli Gurriel laced a two-run double off Max Scherzer in the first inning, sending the hometown crowd into a frenzy. However, the Nationals scored five straight runs before preventing just enough damage amid the Astros’ late-inning scoring opportunities.

While the series remains in Houston for Game 2, the Nationals will be a confident bunch Wednesday night.

Preview and Prediction

Scherzer bested Gerrit Cole in the opening round, but Game 2 features another heavyweight fight on the mound.

During the postseason, Strasburg has tossed 22 innings and surrendered only four earned runs. He’s struck out 33 batters and issued a single walk, posting a 3-0 record and dominant 1.64 ERA while Washington is 4-0 in his appearances.

Verlander hasn’t been anywhere near as effective.

Since throwing seven shutout innings in Game 1 of the ALDS, he’s allowed 10 runs on 17 hits and five walks in the last 17.1 innings. That’s a dramatic drop in performance after he finished the regular season 21-6 with a 2.58 ERA and .803 WHIP.

Don’t mistake that for us discounting the 36-year-old, who is poised to make his 30th career playoff start. But if the Nats can rough up Cole for five runs, Verlander had better be on his game.

The Astros can provide Verlander with a couple of early runs, though; Strasburg’s 4.36 first-inning ERA was his worst in any frame. From there, it’s a matter of Verlander avoiding a repeat of Cole’s mistakes and not allowing the Nats back in.

Washington’s feisty lineup will keep it close, but Houston should even the series at one victory apiece.

Astros vs Nationals Live

Astros vs Nationals Live : The Houston Astros host the Washington Nationals in Game 1 of the 2019 World Series at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday. The Astros beat the Rays in the ALDS, and advanced to the World Series with a win over the Yankees in the ALCS. Meanwhile, the Nationals had a longer path to the Fall Classic. Washington beat the Brewers in the NL Wild Card Game, got past the top-seeded Dodgers in five games in the NLDS and then won the pennant with a four-game sweep over the Cardinals in the NLCS. The Nationals come into Game 1 on six days of rest, while the Astros will be on just two days of rest.

The Nationals, who finished their regular season at 93-69, were 19-31 and in fourth place in the NL East after the first 50 games of the 2019 season. Since May 24 (including the postseason), the Nationals had the best record in baseball at 82-40. The Astros sit second at 81-41.

Washington will be competing in its first World Series in the 51-year history of the franchise. The Astros, who set a franchise record for wins (107-55) during the regular season, are aiming for their second World Series title in three seasons. Here’s how the AL champion Astros built their roster. And how the NL champion Nationals built their roster.

The 115th World Series gets underway on Tuesday, with the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals fighting for baseball’s ultimate prize.

Houston is in the Fall Classic for the second time in third years, having won it all in 2017, while Washington is playing in the World Series for the first time in franchise history.

The best-of-seven series showcases two of Major League Baseball’s best rotations, with a combined five Cy Young awards among the probable starting pitchers.

Houston hosts Games 1 and 2 at Minute Maid Park, before the series heads to Nationals Park in the nation’s capital for Games 3-5.

Right-hander Gerrit Cole (20-5, 2.50 ERA) gets the start for the Astros. The Cy Young favorite is 3-0 in this postseason, giving up just one earned run in 22 ⅔ innings for a 0.40 ERA. Cole hasn’t lost in his last 25 starts, dating back to the middle of May.

The Nationals counter with 35-year-old Max Scherzer (11-7, 2.92 ERA), pitching in the World Series for the second time in his career. Scherzer has been great in the postseason this year, posting a 1.80 ERA in 20 innings.

Astros vs Nationals

World Series 2019 Live

World Series 2019 Live: With a handful of top tier starters in the 2019 World Series, expect to see some old school baseball with runs coming at a premium. While the Nationals surprised many to be in this position as National League Wild Card winner, their play in the postseason shows how much they have grown and how dominant they can be. While many expected the 107-win Astros to be in the World Series because of their starting pitching, the team beat the Yankees in six games in the ALCS due in large part to clutch hitting and defense.

If one word had to describe the 2019 World Series it would be pitching. While it once defined MLB, offense has dominated as of late, especially home runs. With the competing duos of Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg for the Nationals and Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole for the Astros, it’s hard to pick who has the upper hand. However, Nats starter Patrick Corbin and Astros starter Zack Greinke have dominated in their own right this season.

Cole, the Game 1 starter, has been near-unhittable this postseason, with a 0.40 ERA and 32 strikeouts in his three starts. Tallying 358 strikeouts entering the World Series marks the most by any pitcher in a single year since Randy Johnson in 2001 (419). Verlander hasn’t had as much success this postseason. He has a pair of strong outings, but also a pair of losses, and a 3.70 ERA.

While the Nationals took longer to announce the order of their starting rotation, Scherzer will start Game 1. He is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA and coming off back-to-back outstanding outings, allowing a combined one run on five hits and five walks with 18 strikeouts in 14 innings. Meanwhile, Strasburg is making his first World Series appearance. He’s 3-0 this postseason, allowing a total of four runs and tallying double-digit strikeouts twice, which includes Game 3 of the NLCS vs. St Louis when he struck out 12 batters over seven innings.

While pitching may be the big story surrounding the series, plenty of other players will make the series one for the ages. Astros third baseman Alex Bregman and Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon are MVP candidates. Don’t forget about Jose Altuve. The Astros second baseman sent the Astros to the World Series with a walk-off two run home run in Game 6. Altuve sets the table for the Astros and is also hitting .349/.417/.767 with five home runs this month. Also, don’t forget about Juan Soto, the 20-year-old who got the game-winning hit in the NL Wild Card Game and Howard Kendrick, who hit a grand slam in the NLCS vs. Dodgers and was named the MVP after posting a 1.012 OPS.

In the year of the home run, the Astros and Nationals have served as reminders that exciting, dominant starting pitching is still out there, and still effective. Both clubs, who will face off in the 2019 World Series beginning with Game 1 on Tuesday, are built around their rotation. Pitching, was hardly the focus in the regular season, however. Instead, it was the juiced ball that got the attention, from early April when its use was first detected, and then in the postseason when, suddenly, it was nowhere to be found.

Some narrative-setting background, for those who haven’t been following along: the 2019 ball isn’t actually “juiced,” but its seams have been altered in a way that changes its aerodynamics significantly — those alternations and their effects have been described in detail by Meredith Willis and Rob Arthur. That change, which reduces drag, played more than a small part in this record-setting season, in which a new mark was set for the most homers in a single MLB season… on September 11, with weeks to go before all of the playoff spots were locked up. That record-breaking dinger, struck by the Orioles’ Jonathan Villar, was number 6,106 for the year: by season’s end, the league had hit 6,776, shattering the old mark.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, like in the 2017 season when ball physics was also a popular topic, repeatedly denied anything was different about the balls, then moved on to denying that anything was deliberately different, and then finally admitted that something was both different and wrong, and that MLB would get the baseball scientists on the case so they could figure out what it was come the offseason.

Manfred spoke of how MLB wanted to strive for transparency on the ball issue, and that, while they weren’t required to discuss changes to the ball with the Players Association, they wanted to make sure players would be “aware” of the situation. Then, when the playoffs started, roughly a week after Manfred’s comments, the rocket ball vanished. There was no notice from the league. MLB is, once again, denying they’ve done anything, and are saying that the postseason balls are the same as the regular season balls despite acting entirely differently. Then again, MLB spend months trying to tell us there was nothing special or different about the 2019 regular season balls, either.

Teams like the Twins rode the juiced ball to the postseason. Minnesota crushed the previous record for homers in a season: they surpassed that mark of 267 on August 31, and then finished their campaign with 307 bombs. Twins, whose strategy for victory was to hit dingers and let a stellar bullpen do the rest, were swept by the Yankees in the ALDS. Their team, which featured 11 different players with at least 10 homers, had their most significant advantage removed just in time for their toughest and most important matchup of the year.

That brings us back to the Astros and Nationals, teams which did rely on pitching during the regular season. The loss of the juiced ball meant little to them, compared to what it did to the poor Twins. The Nationals made it to October on the strength of a rotation that featured perennial Cy Young contender Max Scherzer doing his usual thing, Stephen Strasburg reminding the Nats why they signed him to a lucrative extension, free agent acquisition Patrick Corbin improving on the work that earned him a $140 million deal this past winter, and the inexplicably revitalized Aníbal Sánchez, who has produced some of the best work of his career the last two seasons in his mid-30s after escaping Detroit.

New York pounced on Houston Astros starter Justin Verlander for a four-run first inning, keyed by Aaron Hicks’ one-out, three-run homer. New York’s 4-1 victory Friday ensured there will be a Game 6 in Houston on Saturday. The Astros still hold a 3-2 series advantage, but they’ll need their home crowd to help them regain momentum.

Houston-Washington Has Loads of Pitching and Star Power

A Nationals-Astros series is a pitching lover’s dream.

It’s not these are offenses are lacking in any way. Houston and Washington finished this season third and sixth, respectively, in runs scored. With Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve leading one lineup, and Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto pacing the other, these clubs can score in bunches.

But with starting pitching of this caliber, sometimes it doesn’t matter who’s at the plate.

In this power-crazed season, only 20 qualified starters had ERAs south of 3.50. This series would feature six of them: Gerrit Cole, Verlander, Max Scherzer, Zack Greinke, Patrick Corbin and Stephen Strasburg.

ESPN’s Cy Young predictor labels Strasburg as the NL favorite for the award. He posted a pristine 18-6 record, held hitters to a tiny 1.04 WHIP and punched out 251 of them in 209 innings.

“There is no better possible 2019 World Series matchup when it comes to starting pitching,”’s Mike Axisa wrote in late September. “… Add in Bregman and Rendon, [Yordan] Alvarez and Soto, Jose Altuve, Trea Turner, George Springer and Victor Robles, and you have yourself the makings of an exciting series.”

New York-Washington Pits Old Against New

WASHINGTON, DC – OCTOBER 15: Max Scherzer #31 of the Washington Nationals celebrates winning game four and the National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Nationals Park on October 15, 2019 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Rob Carr/
The Yankees are the biggest, most decorated winners in MLB history. They have 40 World Series appearances and 27 championships on their resume. Their trophy collection is an embarrassment of riches.

The Nationals have already probed deeper into the postseason than ever before. Prior to this October, they had never won a playoff series, let alone a pennant. Even in their Montreal Expos days, they didn’t reach the World Series.

That said, New York’s history is mostly a distant kind. The Yankees would be making their first World Series trip in a decade. And Washington’s previous stumbles don’t reflect this roster. The Nats have new and maturing talent, not to mention one of the best pitching trios in baseball.

In other words, forget what history has to say. If you injected the Nationals with truth serum, they’d probably admit to wanting the Yankees.

“When it comes to [a World Series opponent], Nationals should have one clear, if undesirable, option. That is to root for the New York Yankees,” Chase Hughes wrote for NBC Sports Washington. “… They … probably represent the Nats’ best path towards getting their first [title].”

New York boasts a better lineup and a more reliable bullpen than Washington. But that’s true of Houston, too. What’s different about the Yankees is they don’t have the same quality or depth in their rotation. That’s the biggest (only?) advantage the Nationals would have in either possible matchup, and it also could be the key to quieting the Bronx Bombers’ bats.

On paper, the Astros would figure to be fairly heavy favorites over the Nats. The Yankees might be favored, too, but the gap wouldn’t be as wide, which could lead to a more competitive series.

World Series Live

World Series Live: Six of the best 15 or so starting pitchers in MLB will come together in the 2019 World Series between the Astros and Nationals. For Houston: Zack Greinke, Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole. For Washington: Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin. The first game of the World Series starts at 8:08 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

With the Washington Nationals pulling off a clean sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS, there was a rather long break before the team could make its much anticipated World Series appearance. But, that wait has reached its end, as Tuesday marks the beginning of this year’s fall classic.

On Saturday night, the Washington Nationals learned of their opponent: the Houston Astros. The AL West division winners took care of the New York Yankees in six games, clinching a berth in the World Series with a walk-off homerun by Jose Altuve. For Houston, this will be the second World Series appearance in three seasons, as the team took home the title in 2017.

But, this team maybe even better than that one. The core of Altuve and Carlos Correa now also features a rising superstar in Alex Bregman and a stellar bat in Michael Brantley to make the lineup one of the most potent. As for the pitching rotation, it’s equally as dominant. One could make the case for either Justin Verlander or Gerrit Cole to take home the AL Cy Young, and the Astros have both. Oh, and they can also run out Zack Greinke for good measure. Cole hasn’t lost a start since May (yes, you read that right) and while Verlander and Greinke have struggled at times in the postseason, they aren’t exactly arms you want to face.

As impressive as Houston is, the Nationals pack their own punch as well. Anthony Rendon, Trea Turner, Juan Soto and NLCS MVP Howie Kendrick star in a lineup that has thrived on timely hitting in October. Add that to the four-headed monster of Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Patrick Corbin and Anibal Sanchez that handled the Cardinals with ease, and you have the formula for an exciting World Series.

It will be Scherzer against Cole in Game 1, here’s everything you need to know about the series opener.

This Pool C encounter offers up the chance for the French to go one step closer to sealing their qualification for the next round and their odds of 1/25 suggest that this may be something of a formality.

France will look to long-serving number eight Louis Picamoles for inspiration as he captains his country for the first time against the United States in the World Cup’s ‘group of death’.Les Bleus squeaked home 23-21 against Argentina in their first match and are hoping to press their advantage in the ultra-competitive Pool C, which also includes England, who beat the United States 45-7.

Coach Jacques Brunel has rung the chances for the clash in Fukuoka, on the southwestern tip of Japan, with only three players surviving from the nail-biting win over the Pumas.Fly-half Camille Lopez, whose drop goal broke Pumas hearts, starts at 10, preferred this time to young gun Romain Ntamack.

The Americans on the other hand will be looking to put on a better display than in their opener when they were despatched 45-7 by England a few days ago. The USA are offered at 14/1 to spring a surprise at the end of 80 minutes.

You have to go back over a decade for the last time these sides with France winning 39-31 during a tour to the States in 2004. These teams also met in the Rugby World Cup in 2003 and on that occasion the French ran out comfortable 41-14 winners.

Fickou scored in the French victory against Argentina in their opening match of the tournament.

You can get 9/20 on France to lead after 20 minutes and 4/1 for the USA to be in front at that period of the match.

This all seems very straightforward for the French as they go about enhancing their reputations at the tournament while the USA are likely to struggle as they face the prospect of another big defeat.
